The Mayo Clinic Diet has been around for over 30 years, yet it has nothing to do with the famous hospital in Rochester, NY. It usually involves eating grapefruits at every meal, and maintaining a low carbohydrate, high protein and high fat diet. The diet typically lasts for just one week to achieve rapid weight loss.
The idea behind the grapefruit at every meal is that it is believed that the fruit helps to promote rapid weight loss by burning fat. Combined with a low carbohydrate intake you could take the weight off very quickly – or so they claim. Much of the information available on the Mayo Clinic Diet is perpetuated through junk email blasts and it must be noted that there is no “official” Mayo Clinic Diet. Therefore, there are several versions of the diet that you might be familiar with, however most involve high protein and high fat content.
The high fat and high protein consumption is to make you feel full and stop hunger pains. It seems contrary to common sense but by eating high fat content meals you will actually reduce hunger and therefore eat less, allowing you to lose weight. This unlimited grapefruit, meat and poultry diet also includes fried foods which most diet plans avoid.

- Complex carbohydrates are severely lacking in this diet.
There are many quick weight loss diet plans on the market today. This is one of them, but it is not safe for long term use and it is not nutritionally balanced. There is no mention of exercise for most versions of this diet plan, which most experts agree is critical for any meaningful weight management program. There is currently no concrete scientific support for the belief that grapefruit consumption aids in burning fat.
There are many critics of this weight loss plan, most of whom point out the lack of any long term success while on the Mayo Clinic Diet. Health experts recommend a target healthy weight loss of 2 pounds per week, so the Mayo Clinic Diet claims of 52 pounds in two months could actually be dangerous to your health. While it is possible to lose weight while on this diet it is not sustainable and the weight loss is likely to be temporary. This diet is not safe and should not be followed for more than a couple of weeks at the most. A low carbohydrate diet, which this is, can be effective in weight loss, but this diet is simply not good for everyone.
