The Sensa Diet was created by Dr. Alan Hirsch. When you go on the diet you are purchasing a supplement that you are supposed to eat with every meal. You literally sprinkle the supplement on your meal as though it were salt or pepper. This special supplement tricks your taste buds and olfactory senses into thinking they are full. In this way, you feel full and don’t eat as much, leading to weight loss.
The Sensa diet claims that you can lose 30 pounds within six months. It was Dr. Alan Hirsch himself who conducted clinical trials (although to date this has not be corroborated by independent studies) that prove his natural weight loss system. The amazing thing about this system is that you eat whatever you like, so long as you sprinkle the nutritional supplement on it first.
When you order your package you get two flavours: salty and sweet. They are designed to be flavorless so that you do not ruin your food tasting experience. The salty flavor is made to be sprinkled on salty foods. The sweet flavor is made to be sprinkled on sweet foods. Nothing is forbidden when you are on this diet. Literally, you can eat steak, pork, fish and chicken, eggs, pasta, potatoes, all the veggies, ice cream, brownies and even Twinkies if you like… As long as you sprinkle first! The idea is that the sprinkles will make you feel full sooner and keep you feeling full longer so that you will stop eating other things. The instructions do encourage you to chew your food completely and to take your time when eating. This will allow the product the time required to make you feel full.
Positives
Dr. Hirsch’s studies seem to show excellent results. The product does reduce your appetite and gives you quick results. The diet is very simple to use – just sprinkle the product on your meal. By controlling your cravings with this supplement there is no need to give up your favorite foods.
Negatives
With the Sensa diet there is no attempt to educate you on nutritional choices. Portion size is not discussed, nor is there any mention of what foods are healthy and which are not. In fact, you are encouraged to eat anything you like. This does not lead one to behavioral changes, which is often critical for long term eating and diet control.
Therefore the results could be short term only, since you may not have learned anything or changed your eating habits by the time you run out of the supplement. The supplement itself is made with all artificial ingredients including Maltodrexin (which is a by-product of corn), Carmine, Soy, Tricalcium Phosphate and milk. Furthermore, There is no exercise schedule that comes with this diet plan. There is mention of “continuing your existing exercise routine,” because any good diet must include a physical component.
A six month supply of the supplement will cost $235.00 and you will also receive a DVD and instructional booklet. Dr. Hirsch seems to be an expert in his field and this is a novel approach to weight loss, but this system does not always lend itself to making a permanent change in one’s eating habits.
