Yep, you read that right… fun.
Dieting isn’t always thought of as an entertaining or lighthearted undertaking, even when the results are the prize. However, dieting doesn’t have to be doom and deprivation, either. In fact, it shouldn’t be. A diet you hate is a diet you’ll be dropping very quickly. Believe it or not, even if you aren’t in love with your diet, as long as it’s effective and safe, there are ways to stick with it and make it more fun.
Give Yourself A Prize!
Everybody loves a prize. The ones you design for yourself are even better. By choosing rewards for meeting goals, you give yourself a pat on the back and the motivation to keep going. Sometimes waiting for the end result gets old. So set some goals between you and the finish line and reward yourself for meeting them. The rewards don’t have to be expensive. In fact, some of the best rewards for you may be free. Treat yourself to playing hooky from work for the day. Get a pile of books from the library and curl up for a whole weekend. Have a real pedicure or hire a maid for the day. Only you know what rewards will have the most impact on you. If money isn’t an issue, make the rewards grand. If you’re on a tight budget, make them free and fabulous.
Went Down A Dress Size? Go Get A Dress!
Don’t go wild here, unless you really are rich. But it can be really motivating and fun to buy one new item of clothing every time you lose a size. Don’t go nuts, there’s no point in buying a wardrobe if you’re still losing weight. However, one new skirt or pair of trousers will reward your hard work and also be a blast. If you have a friend of a different size, maybe you can share new purchases to save money and make it even more fun. Hand me downs can be a blast, too.
Try Something New
Make a point of trying at least one new food per week or month. Some diets can get tedious because you’re eating the same foods over and over. Pick oe of the foods on your diet that you’ve never eaten. Or try it again for the first time in years. You may want to try preparing it a different way. Have some friends over for an eggplant party. Each friend brings a different eggplant dish. Maybe you’ll hate every one of them, but you’ll have fun with your girlfriends. And, you just may find a few new foods to eat.
Diet with a Friend
This is a real basic one, but it works. Having a buddy to turn to, laugh with, sweat with and yell at can be a big factor in keeping you happy on your diet. One way to make a diet more fun is to do it with someone who is fun. Not only can you share some good times exercising, trying new recipes and just laughing about dieting, you can also really be a help to someone else. And that’s fun, isn’t it?
The best way to make a diet fun is to not take it too seriously. Yes, your health is serious. However, the best exercise is exercise that’s fun. The same is true of your diet. If you take every setback or slip-up too seriously, if you think you have to follow every diet to the very letter, you’ll just end up getting discouraged and dumping the diet. Take it easy on yourself, give yourself some room to wiggle and have fun thinking about how great you’ll fell when you’re done!
