Dukan Diet

The Dukan Diet is the number 1 diet program in France. This weight loss program was developed by Dr. Pierre Dukan MD a nutrition expert in France. The Dukan Diet is highly personalized in that it helps you to determine your ideal weight, and then calculates how long it will take to achieve this goal with explanations of how long each step will last, and how much the total program will cost based on these factors. Additionally, the program offers daily e-mail return which is an e-mail in the morning outlining a plan for the day which you then return in the evening with answers to standard questions which then adapt the next morning’s e-mail to help you to best achieve your goals.

The Dukan Diet follows a 4 step program which focuses the first 2 steps on losing the weight and the final 2 steps on keeping the weight off forever. The steps of the Dukan Diet program are attack, cruise, consolidation, and permanent stabilization. The attack step of the program lasts 7 days and focuses on 72 high protein foods to produce rapid weight loss. The consolidation step of the program lasts until the goal weight is reached. During this portion of the program 5 days of pure protein are alternated with 5 days of protein and 28 approved vegetables. The approved vegetables include lettuce, celery, cucumbers, spinach, radishes, broccoli, tomatoes, and bell peppers. The consolidation step of the program lasts a total of 5 days per each pound lost.

This portion of the program marks the beginning of the return to a balance diet. It begins by allowing a serving of fruit, a few slices of whole wheat bread, and a small portion of cheese each day. Twice a week you are allowed to consume 2 small portions of starchy carbohydrates during this step of the program. Also, during this step of the program you are allowed 2 cheat meals per week. However, after each cheat meal the following day is devoted to approved proteins exclusively. The permanent stabilization step of the program lasts for a lifetime and follows 3 simple non-negotiable measures. During the permanent stabilization step you are allowed to eat normally; however, one day per week is devoted to approved proteins exclusively.

The Dukan Diet is a reworked version of the Protein-Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF). The PSMF was designed over three decades ago for use by obese individuals and follows a high protein diet. The Dukan Diet promises that 3 to 5 pounds can be lost per week.

There are a number of pros to consider with the Dukan Diet. The Dukan Diet can practically guarantee weight loss due to the high protein diet which it suggests. Additionally, there is an exercise component to the Dukan Diet which is an essential part to all successful weight loss programs. The Dukan Diet recommends walking 20 to 30 minutes per day.

There also are a number of cons to consider with the Dukan Diet. The Dukan Diet is very strict which makes it difficult to adhere to over the long term. Because of this it is likely that weight regain will occur once the plan is abandoned. Another con is that a high protein diet can be dangerous to some individual’s health especially those who are at risk for electrolyte imbalances.
